Head Coach Kevin Willison is hoping this will be the first of many CSSHL championships the Edge Boys Prep Mountaineers bring home as his squad defeated Pursuit of Excellence in two straight games to clinch the inaugural league title. Following a commanding regular season performance where Edge had a tie on its otherwise unblemished record of 11 victories, Willison's troops earned two hard fought battles over POE 5-3 on Friday afternoon and 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Friday's game saw Edge battle back from a 3-1 deficit behind F Brady Ramsay's hat-trick and one helper, D Mathew Dumba and F Bart Moran's single marker, D Geoff Crisfield's and F Chase Paylor's two assists and lone assists from F Max Reavis, D Tanner Hicks and D Brandon Hall. G Logan Marlow secured the win in relif of game starter G Matt Shawchuk, Logan making 9 saves on all 9 shots he faced.
Saturday's second game was more typical of Edge's play this season - 4 power play markers and solid grit from start to finish. G Shawchuk rebounded to post the win, going the whole distance and making 10 saves on the 12 shots he faced. F Mitch Moroz paced the victory with a 2-goal and 1-assist performance and he was more than helped Moran with a goal and 2 apples, Hick's goal and assist and F Chase McMurphy's and F Kyle Threndyle's singletons. D Doug McDonald, Halls, F Tanner Labbe, F Shota Niwa and Ramsay each scooped up an assist.
Some nice memories from the past week-end: Paylor's power in the corners, McDonald's triumphant return from injury, Hicks' leadership on the point, Donaldson's quickness with the puck, Ramsay's nose for the net, McMurphy's growing mean-ness (the right kind of nastiness!), Moran's doggedness on the PK, Reavis blocking shots.....the list goes on.
"After losing a very emotional final game in the MPHL championships a mere week ago, we are so proud that the boys bounced back to earn these two victories", noted Willison. "This year was a very good start for the CSSHL and we are honoured to be an integral part of its history. Along with the other great teams, we know we are laying down a solid foundation".
Well done Boys Prep Mountaineers - players, their families, coaches, therapists, administrators and fans!
EDGE EARNS CSSHL INDIVIDUAL HARDWARE
It was only fitting that the CSSHL's top team secured some individual hardware in the league's award ceremony held Friday night between games. Edge winners were:

Brady Ramsay - top scorer; league most valuable player
Matt Shawchuk - top goaltender
Tanner Hicks - top defenseman

EDGE LOSES MPHL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN HEARTBREAKER
Try as they might, the Mountaineers could not produce magic a third consecutive time as they were nipped 2-1 by St Andrew's College in the MPHL's championship game. For the second year in a row Edge fought valiantly un til the final whistle only to lose a heartbreaker, last season to lake Forest Academy and this year to SAC.
The lads did not quit - their 2-1 OT win over Gilmour Academy on Friday and their roaring come-from-behind 9-8 OT Saturday night special over Stanstead will go down in Edge hockey lore as testament to the tenacity, courage and grit of this edition of the Prep team.
Luck, great goaltending and the odd bounce helped propel SAC to their ever-so-close victory in Sunday's finale. D Matt Dumba opened the scoring on an unassisted marker a mere four minutes into the game. SAC tied it at 1 apiece in the middle stanza. With both goaltenders displaying Jacques Plante-like reflexes, the game stayed knotted until the back end of the third period when SAC capitalized on a PP opportunity.
"The boys work so hard but it was not to be today", sighed Head Coach Kevin Willison. "We are very proud of the way we played all week-end. Each game was do-or-die and we survived until the final buzzer in the championship game. it was a real rollercoaster of emotions - winning in OT, then a wild OT game and then today. We hope to be back next season to challenge for the title once again".
G Logan Marlow turned in another fine performance kicking out 26 of 28 enemy drives, many of them dangerous scoring chances. Edge shooters fired 22 biscuits at the SAC cage.
EDGE WINS IN OVERTIME...AGAIN
Edge 9-8
The Mountaineers knock off the first place Stanstead in a 17 goal outburst. Play began with a goal by Stanstead within the first 21 seconds and from there on Standstead seemed to be ahead by one within 30 seconds of the Edge scoring to tie. The first period ended up with Stanstead leading 3-2. Second period brought 4 more goals with Stanstead leading 5-4. With an outburst of 7 more goals in the third period, Edge Mountaineers eventually tied the game with a goal by Mathew Dumba (D) with 3 seconds left.
The game descended into a 4 on 4 sudden death overtime. Once again the combination of Brady Ramsay (F) and Max Reavis (F) proved to have the winning touch. With a two on two rush cross over, Ramsay with a drop pass to Reavis roofed a rocket past netminder Patrick Earle. The play was eerlily reminiscent of last night heriocs by the exact same duo to advance the Mountaineers.
Goal scorers were lead by Tanner Labbe (F) with the hat trick. Max Reavis (F) was seen to score two, along with singles from Tanner Hicks (F), Brandon Halls (F), Josh Dutton (F) and Mathew Dumba (D).
On the other side of the semi final play, St. Andrew's upset first seated and previously undeafeted Lake Forest in an overtime 5-4 win.
Congratulations to Logan Marlow (G) and Mathew Dumba (D) for being named to the MPHL League All-Star team.
Edge Mountaineers go for the gold in tomorrow's match up against St. Andrew's College at 9am EST.
EDGE RIDES HOT GOALIE TO NARROW VICTORY
Edge Wins 2-1
Normally thieves aren't welcome, but there was a burglar on the Edge team Friday night...G Logan Marlow decided that today was going to be his best performance in a Mountaineer uniform and carried the team to a thrilling overtime victory in a game where Edge just couldn't seem to get on track.
Edge Mountaineers held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game only to see Gilmour Academy's #19 finally break Marlow's goose egg with an extra attacker and only 14 seconds left on the clock. With a quick regroup and 4 on 4 sudden-death overtime ahead of them, the duo of F Brady Ramsay and F Max Reavis were prudently placed on the ice by Coach Willison. This combination quickly ended the festivities with a laser beam shot for the overtime winner off Reavis' composite weapon a mere 33 seconds in.
Coach Willison stated that "Logan Marlow wanted to take his game to another level and attract Junior and College teams alike, that was a great way to start".
Saturday's puck drop is set for 7 pm EST against Northeastern Division Champions Stanstead College from Quebec.
MPHL Championship Play @ Gilmour Academy
Well folks, this is it. One week-end of madcap hockey to determine this season's winner of the Midwest Prep Hockey League Championship. All 10 MPHL teams journey to Gilmour Academy in Gate Mills, Ohio for three days of intense competition.
Our Prep Boys finished the regular season sitting 2nd in the MPHL's West Division behind only powerhouse Lake Forest Academy and earned the right to play host Gilmour Academy in the first of three "winner-moves-on" games on Friday night at 7pm (local time). Edge completed a 9-3-1 slate, good for 19 points in 13 games. Gilmour ended 6-5-2 for 14 points in 13 games.
Edge won the head-to-head battle with a 4-1 win over Gilmour on December 5th and a 1-1 tie on January 30. Edge scoring was spread out in those two games with F's Tanner Labbe, Austin Donaldson, Kyle Threndyle, Chase Paylor and Shota Niwa each netting single goals. G Logan Marlow went the distance in each game. This game should be a tad different though as the teams will be fresh and playing each other in their first games of the week-end. The previous games were the second game of the day for both teams. Expect some great action in this one.
Should Edge defeat Gilmour, they would likely face Northeast Division champs Stanstead College on Saturday night at 7pm. Winning that game would put Edge in the Gold Medal game, quite possibly Lake Forest Academy on Sunday at 9:20am.
