GIRLS START CHALLENGE CUP WITH TWO VICTORIES

Our Girls Varsity started the Challenge Cup week-end rather impressively with a commanding 8 - 4 victory over the London Devilettes. What was even more remarkable was a five goal, third period performance by F Brittany Styner - yes, this is not a typing error - as Edge scored six goals in the third period with a hat + two coming off Styner's stick.

Edge took a 1 - 0 lead on a goal by F Stefanie Pohlod with assists to Styner and D Kayla Kaluzny. London scored twice to take the lead before F Logan Murray scored to notch the game at two. London took the 3 - 2 lead on the power play early in the third period. Styner then scored four unanswered goals, a fifth marker by D Kelly Murray enabled Edge to take a 7 - 3 lead. London the made the game 7 -4 before Styner closed the scoring to stop the clock at 8 - 4. Other assists in the third period went to Logan Murray, Pohlod and D Brittney Fouracres with two assists.

G Crystal Patterson made 20 saves in the Edge net for the victory.

In the second game of the day, Edge roundly defeated the Boston Shamrocks 8 - 1. Edge went up 2 - 0 in the first on goals by Styner from Fouracres, then Kelly Murray from F J'Nai Mahadeo. Edge scored four goals in the second period to take a 6 - 0 lead. Pohlod made it 3 - 0 on assists to Logan and D Madison Murray. F Taylor Sakundiak made it 4 - 0, unassisted. BIG CHALLENGES AWAIT GIRLS VARSITY THIS WEEK-END

The Girls Varsity Mountaineers face several tough challenges this week-end as they journey to Washington, D.C. to skate in the JWHL's Challenge Cup, perhaps the finest Girls Midget and Prep School hockey tournament in North America.

First of all ... it is in Washington, D.C. and unless you have been buried in books the past week, we have all been watching news reports of the US capital's battles with an on-going series of snow storms.  The area has been locked down pretty tight for the past four days with no real relief in sight at least until next week.

Once safely in DC, the girls compete in a tremendously competitive tournament.  The JWHL squads are there as are elite clubs such as the aptly named Los Angeles Selects, Nepean Wildcats, London (Ont) Devilettes and Detroit Little Caesars.

Head Coach Mario Amantea noted that " the coaching staff and team were disappointed at our last week-end in Minnesota and we want to have a strong showing against some of the best teams in North America.  We hope this will be a big three days for us - we know the calibre of team gathering for this tournament".

FEATURE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK - # 5 Kayla Kaluzny, # 9 Izzy Fayerman and #20 Kayla Lavallee

This trio of veteran players bring much size, grit, hockey smarts and puck movement to the Girls Varsity team.  The two Kaylas may be rookies to the Edge program but both have played like seasoned competitors, patrolling the blue line with poise and a bit of intimidation and making life just a tad safer for goaltenders Patterson and Quiring.  Izzy is a skilled forward with a tenacious work ethic and some soft hands, a nice combination for the Mountaineers to have.  This group is always counted on to make smart decisions with and without the puck and they have delivered that this season!

Here are a few compelling stats for this trio:  Kaluzny has won an overwhelming 93% of his puck battles (39 of 42), an almost unheard of winning percentage.  Fayerman wins at least 56% of her face-offs, an exceptional figure.  And Lavallee is a prime example of your rugged stay-at-home D with 58 minutes in the sin bin - keeping opposing forwards honest!

A fine trio of outstanding Mountaineers!
